Eduard Bäumer was born in Germany in 1892. From 1912 he studied at the Städel Artinstitute in Frankfurt. Very important for his artistic development was the contact with Johannes Itten. He was also deeply influenced by the circle of the expressionists, above all Max Beckmann. He stayed in Italy for a few years and was fascinated of its landscape. This was followed by a stay in Paris, where he got in contact with the technique of cubism. Bäumer moved with his family to Salzburg in 1933. During World War II they went underground. 1947 he became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He moved to Tropea in Italy in 1964. Bäumer died in a car accident in 1977. Eduard Bäumer artistic activity cannot be seen as a part of the big art movements of the early 20th century. His experience with the cubism influenced his work significantly. Nonetheless he does not belong to the big Ismen of the last century. The most prominent element of his art is the use of color. Bäumer was strongly effected by nature, especially his late works was dominated by landscapes.
