Hans Fronius was born in Sarajewo in 1903. 1914 he was eyewitness of the assassination of the Austrian successor, an incident that had a strong impact on him. After the World War I the family moved to Graz/Styria. From 1922 to 1928 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at Prof. Karl Sterrer and attended the master program of Alois Delug. From 1930 to 1960 he worked as professor in Graz and later in Fürstenfeld. Fronius got acquainted with Alfred Kubin and they stayed in touch until Kubin´s death. During World War II he had military service in Russia and Italy. In 1961 he moved to the vicinity of Vienna. The artist died in 1988. Hans Fronius artistic oeuvre receives great attention in the Austrian art history. His paintings and his graphic novels were considered as works of expressive realism because of the spontaneous gesture, the narrative power and the fantastic imagination. The thematic spectrum ranges from portraits of literary motifs to natural and city landscapes. Fronius was strongly influenced of the literary work of Kafka and Poe and made several illustrations relating to the authors.
