Herbert Boeckl was born in Carinthia in 1894. At first he studied architecture at the technical college. After the First World War he started drawing as an autodidact and made many trips to Berlin, Palermo, etc. In 1923 in Paris Boeckl developed a strong interest in the modern art. In 1927 he already had his first exhibition in the Vienna Secession. From 1935 to 1939 he worked as a lecturer at the painting school at the Academy of Fine Arts at Vienna. From 1939 he was the head of the evening life drawing. After Second World War he traveled a lot. Later he became principal of the Academy of Fine Arts for a couple of years. Herbert Boeckl died in 1966. After the First World War and after the death of Klimt and Schiele the Austrian art scene stagnated. With his art, Herbert Boeckl started a new chapter. He was very important for the cultural reconstruction of Austria. In his early work he had an expressive style with impasto. Then he changed his view on reality. The use of color was very important for Herbert Boeckl. Since 1945 he created his own response to the international abstract art.
