Giselbert Hoke was born intoday´s Czech Republic in 1927. The years from 1943 to 1945 were marked by war and captivity. In 1944 he lost of his right arm. From 1946 to 1956 he joined the masterclass of Robin Christian Andersen. He went on a study tour to Paris from 1953 to 1954. In 1961 he bought the castle Saager in Carinthia where he built an atelier in the run of the following years. Since 1974 he was teaching architecture at the University of Graz. In 1982 and 1987 he also taught at the International Summer Academy of Salzburg. Hoke traveled a lot of to North and South America and to the Far East. He had many exhibitions since the 70ies. The artist died in 2015. Giselbert Hokes artistic work can be placed between two poles of painting and work in the field of architecture. Central motifs of his oeuvre are the female gender and later also landscapes. The monochrome surfaces, the emptiness and loneness are characteristic of his works. In his later pieces of work he got increasingly minimalistic.
