Franz Grabmayr was born in Carinthia in 1927. Initially he studied to become a teacher. Then he taught Mathematics and Geometry in Carinthia. From 1954 to 1964 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and completed the masterclass by Robin Christian Andersen. 1962 he gave up his teaching position. He moved in a Renaissance castle in Rosenau in 1974. From 1966 to 1971 he partially painted in a sandpit. Since 1973 he lived in the near of Zwettl. Grabmayr spent the winter in Vienna. In 1984 was appointed professor. The artist died in 2015 in Vienna. Franz Grabmayr was the role model of the artist circle young wild. Nature is the central motif in his work: mountains and rocks, sandpits and waterfalls, roots and trees. His impasto and dynamic inking is distinctive for his style. He did not use brushes for painting, he worked with spatula instead. For his famous firepaintings, he developed a moving atelier on a tractor. Grabmayr was also one of the first artists who prepared their pictures with fire, ash and earth. His dance pictures show the typical color and forceful brushwork.
