Serge Poliakoff was born in Moskau in 1900. Due the Russian revolution he fled to Istanbul and then to Paris in 1917. Since 1929 he had been studying at the Academy of Paris. In 1935 he continued his study at the Slade School of Art in London. In 1962 he got the citizenship of France. After a heart attack in 1965, he had to take things the easy way. The artist died in 1969. Serge Poliakoff developed an individual type of abstract painting in which he varied the color fields. Initially, he had made use of dark and earth tones and since the 50ies he also worked with funky colors. Poliakoff is considered as the most important representative of the Nouvelle École de Paris.
