Max Peiffer-Wathenphul was born in Saxony-Anhalt/Germany in 1896. From 1914 to 1918 he studied medicine and law. He visited the Bauhaus at Weimar in 1919 to 1921. There he got to know other artists and became friends with Kurt Schwitters, Oskar Schlemmer and Gerhard Marcks. From 1922 onwards hewent on his first journeys to Salzburg, Vienna and Italy. He took up a teaching position from 1927 to 1931. He fled to Venice in 1946. In 1958 he moved to Rome. Pfeiffer Wathenpul arranged a lot of exhibitions at home and abroad. The artist died in 1976 in Rome. Max Peiffer-Wathenphul was very important for the development of the Salzburger art scene. He taught and inspired a generation of artists a fact that becomes evident when looking at those artists´ works . Throughout his whole life, he relied on the representational artwhich might be due to his formal training at the Bauhaus with very strict reduction and stylization. Central motifs are city views, still life pictures, classical landscapes of Greece and Italy while Pfeiffer-Wathephul renounced any temporal reference. Peiffer Wathenphul used muted colors and had almost a transparent surface including the painting ground.
