Emil Schumacher was born in Germany in 1912. In 1932 he started to study at the art school in Dortmund. Since 1935 he had been active as an freelance artist. He was co-founder of the artist circle Junger Westen. From 1955 onwards he arranged numerous exhibitions. He taught at the art school of Hamburg from 1958 to 1960 and then he became professor at Karlsruhe until he quit in 1977. Schumacher was a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He was awarded many art prizes. The artist died in 1999. Emil Schumacher is considered as one of the most important artist in the 20th century in Germany. He always felt connected to nature, already as the starting point of his career. Even if his art seems very abstract, it has its origin in the natural environment. In his expressive pictures, the focus lies on the importance of the line. The object is only the basis for free painterly experience.
